South Africa Become New No.1 in Test Cricket, Australia Slip Two Places in WTC
Cape Town. South Africa beat Australia by 176 runs in the third and deciding Test to win the three-match series 2-1, and with it took the No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings. South Africa's 124 rating points are just two more than Australia's 122. Such a thin margin makes clear that the top spot is not settled — one or two results in the coming months could change hands again.
The series initially tilted towards the visitors. Having lost the first Test, South Africa were under pressure. In the second Test at Gqeberha, captain Temba Bavuma's innings of 179 pulled the hosts back into the series. On the back of that knock South Africa levelled the series and then won the decider in Cape Town by 176 runs. Coming back after falling behind, and then reaching No.1 in the rankings — that is the biggest story of this win.
After the win, Bavuma described it as the biggest series win of his career and said the credit for reaching No.1 belongs to the entire dressing room. He said very few people had expected South Africa to reach this point before the series, and that is what makes this win special. Bavuma also admitted that after losing the first Test there were questions within the team, but the Gqeberha innings restored confidence.
On the rankings, South Africa sit first with 124 points and Australia have slipped to second with 122. New Zealand, India and England are also in the top five, though their points are not given. The ICC Test ranking is a rolling, multi-year weighted system in which older results gradually lose weight — which is why a two-point gap matters, and why it is almost certain to change in the next series.
The second effect fell on the World Test Championship table. In the new position New Zealand are first at 72.22 per cent, South Africa second at 71.43 per cent and Australia third at 69.23 per cent. Before the series Australia were top at 80 per cent, South Africa second at 75 per cent and New Zealand third at 72.22 per cent. In other words, this one series dropped Australia from top to third.
One detail needs understanding here, because on the surface it looks counter-intuitive. South Africa won the series, but their WTC percentage fell from 75 to 71.43. The reason is that a loss also adds a full match to the calculation — the Proteas' record went from 3 wins and 1 loss in 4 Tests to 5 wins and 2 losses in 7, that is from 60 points out of 60 to 60 out of 84. Australia's record went from 8 wins in 10 Tests to 9 wins and 4 losses in 13, that is from 96 out of 96 to 108 out of 156. It is this arithmetic that kept the series winner behind New Zealand.
The second important point is that South Africa's figure rests on only 7 Tests, while Australia have played 13 and New Zealand between 12 and 18. Percentage normalises points but not sample size — a percentage built on 7 matches swings far more sharply. In other words, the question of whether South Africa are genuinely the strongest team is not fully answered by these numbers.
From an Indian perspective the significance is different. India have seven more Tests to play in this cycle — two against New Zealand later this month and five against Australia early next year. Australia slipping two places in the WTC is directly beneficial to India, because Australia are India's most direct rival in the race to the final.
It should also be stated clearly that this series had no effect on India's own position — their points and percentage remain the same. But saying the series "changed nothing" for India would not be right. Mathematically, winning all seven matches is not compulsory for India; if rain or draws split points and rival teams drop points, qualification is possible with fewer wins. Winning all seven is a safe route, not the only route.
The bigger picture is that Test cricket has a new No.1, and one that looked out of the contest after the first match of the series. A two-point gap and a small seven-match sample suggest this crown is currently on loan — South Africa will have to keep winning to make it permanent.
